Premarin (Conjugated Estrogens)
Drug Uses
Premarin is taken to treat menopause symptoms. Such symptoms may include atrophy of vagina hot flashes, dryness of vagina etc. Premarin can help the body in producing estrogen. It is known that because of hypogonadism, castration or ovarian failure organism is unable to produce sufficient amount of this hormone. Sufficient estrogen’s amount is helpful while breast cancer and advanced prostate treatment.
How Taken
Take the medication as determined by your doctor. Read the medicine label for precise dosing instructions carefully.
Tablets: 0.3 to1.25 mg.
Breast cancer: take 10 mg a day for 3 months.
As a rule, 0.3 mg a day is prescribed in case of menopause symptoms and in order to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Then the dosage may be increased if there are no severe side effects.
During hypogonadism treatment you are adviced to take 0.3 mg/0.625 a day. After 3 weeks of therapy you should stop using Premerin for 1 week. The castrated women/ with ovarian failure should take 1.25 mg of Premarin a day. After 3 weeks of treatment such patients should make an interval for a week.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Estrogens are known to medicate estrogen deficiency (eg., women with removed ovaries) and the menopause symptoms.
Premarin consists of some individual estrogens which are extracted from the pregnant mares’ urine. Estrogens influence most body tissues. They develop females’ sexual organs. Moreover, estrogens maintain sexual peculiarities of women. They increase the cervix secretions and endometrium growth.
Missed Dose
Take this medicine as determined by your doctor. If you omit a dose of Premarin, take it immediately. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up. Then go back to your usual schedule.
Storage
Store Premarin at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C (59-77 degrees F). Keep in a hermetic and light-resistant container. Store it away from light, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Save this remedy beyond the reach of children and away from pets.
Warnings Precautions
This medicine must not be taken during pregnancy because it may cause harm to human fetus. On condition you suspect you are pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. You should discuss all benefits and risks of taking Premarin during your pregnancy. It is known that Premarin passes into human breast milk. Stop breast-feeding while using this medication.
Possible Side Effects
All medicines may provoke certain side effects. Nevertherless, many people have no/ minor side effects. Contact your doctor if any of these side effects take place:
changes in sexual drive; rash; melasma; pain in joints;vaginal bleeding; vaginal spotting, menstruatin loss; prolonged menstruation, pain in breasts; an increase of cornea flexure; headache; nausea; back pain;
Patients who take estrogens are subjected to high danger cholesterol gallstones. This medicine can block the bile stream from the liver and even cause jaundice (very seldom).
It is adviced to take progestins simultaneously with Premarin in order to lower the danger of developing a cancer of the uterus lining. You should consult with your doctor from time to time and inform him or her about any of your side effects and new medical conditions.
Premarin is known to be able to highten the danger of blood clots, heart diseases, breast cancer etc.

More Information
Premarin (Conjugated Estrogens) should be taken only by those patients for whom it is prescribed. You should not give it to others. If your symptoms become worse and do not improve, contact your doctor.
