The determined dose for children 6 months to 12 years of age is 7 mg/kg every 12 hours or 14 mg/kg per day for 5-10 days, the intake dosage is dependant on the infection. For most infections once daily dosing is as effective as twice daily dosing, though once daily dosing has not been estimated for the treatment of skin infections or pneumonia.
Drug Category and Mechanism
Omnicef represents a category of a semi-synthetic (partially man-made) oral antibiotic in the cephalosporin family of antibiotics. The cephalosporin family involves cephalexin (Keflex), cefaclor (Ceclor), cefpodoxime (Vantin), cefixime (Suprax), as well as many injectable antibiotics. Ver much like other cephalosporins cefdinir fights bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from moulding walls that surround them. The walls represent crucial element to protect bacteria from their environment and thus retain the contents of the bacterial cell together. Bacteria cannot persist without a cell wall. Omnicef stands as quite active element against a very wide spectrum of bacteria, involving Staphylococcus aureus; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Streptococcus pyogenes (the cause of strep throat); Hemophilus influenzae; Moraxella catarrhalis; E. coli ; Klebsiella; and Proteus mirabilis. Please remember that the preparate cannot be active against Pseudomonas. Therapeutic uses of cefdinir involves otitis media (infections of the middle ear), contagion of soft tissues, as well as respiratory tract infections. The medicine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in December of 1997.
