Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine)
Uses of the Drug
Trileptal helps to treat some seizures in those patients who are suffering from epilepsy. This drug is either used alone or along with some other medicine. The doctors can use it for some other medical conditions.
How to Take
Trileptal should be taken as per the doctor’s recommendations
- Trileptal can be taken either with food or simply without food.
- Take all the dosages at same timing so that the medicine level in the blood is kept constant. A single dose should not be missed.
- Try to take the medicine at same timing everyday so that you do not forget taking it.
- Even though you feel good do not stop taking Trileptal. A single dose should not be missed.
- If you want to stop Trileptal, do it gradually.
You should consult your doctor in case of any query.
Drug Mechanism and Class
Trileptal is considered to be an anticonvulsant. It slows down the unusual nerve impulses inside the brain.
Missed Dose
If you ever miss a dosage of Trileptal and are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Storage
Trileptal should be stored at the room temperature somewhere between 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F). It should be kept away from children and pets. Trileptal should be stored away from light, moisture and heat.
Warnings Precautions
Trileptal should NOT be taken if:
* You are prone to allergies to a single ingredient present in Trileptal.
You should get in touch with the doctor very soon if you notice any of the above-mentioned problems.
Important:
- Toradol might cause dizziness. Don’t operate machinery, drive, or perform any such work that can cause harmful reactions with Toradol. Taking only Toradol, along with some other drugs, or along with alcohol might make you unable to perform any dangerous task or to drive.
- You should not take medicines or alcohol that causes drowsiness (eg, muscle relaxers, sleep aids) when you use Trileptal; it might cause serious side effects.
- If you had seizures, you might lose consciousness when you take Trileptal. Avoid dangerous activities like (eg, climbing, driving, swimming, and while operating heavy machinery).
- Carry identification (e.g., MedicAlert) while using Trileptal for seizures. You should use an ???ID card’ always
- Birth control pills (e.g. hormonal birth control,) might not function quite well while using Trileptal. For preventing pregnancy, extra birth control pills should be used.
- Trileptal might cause sunburn quite easily. Avoid sunlamps, sun, or the tanning booths.
- Do not stop taking Trileptal suddenly. The doctors should decrease the dose gradually.
- Inform the doctor in case the seizure control becomes worse.
- Lab tests, such as sodium blood cell levels and eye tests might be required for monitoring the progress. Make sure of keeping the appointments.
- Children below 2 years should not take Trileptal. The effectiveness and safety is not yet confirmed.
- Breast-feeding and Pregnancy: If you conceive while using Trileptal, consult with the doctor about the risks and benefits of Trileptal at this time. Don’t breast-feed when you take Trileptal.
Common Side Effects
All medicines can have side effects. However, there are some people who have either less or no side effects. Check whether you have any of the side effects as mentioned below and in that case consult your doctor as soon as possible:
* acne; drowsiness; headache; dry mouth; nausea; indigestion; constipation; stomach pain; dizziness; tiredness; trouble sleeping; tremor; vomiting; unusual walk.
You should consult your doctor immediately in case you have the serious side effects as mentioned below:
* Serious allergic reactions (hives; rash; itching; tightness in chest; difficulty in breathing; swelling of face, lips, mouth, or tongue); chest pain; blood in stool; decreased urination; dark urine; double vision, difficulty speaking; changes in vision, dulled sense of touch; involuntary eye movement; fever, sore throat; chills, low sodium levels (nausea; headache; general body discomfort; lack of energy; decreased consciousness; confusion; severity of seizures; increased frequency or); loss of coordination; joint pain; nosebleed; mental/mood changes; swollen, red, peeling, or blistered skin; seizures; stomach pain; trouble walking; swollen lymph nodes; unusual bleeding or bruising; uncontrolled muscle movements; yellowing of eyes or skin; unusual weakness.
