Paxil (Paroxetine)
Drug Instruction
Paxil is prescribed for the treatment of depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The medicine may be used to treat panic dysfunctions or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It may also be used to treat integrated anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder. Paxil may also be used for other medical conditions as advised by your health care provoder.
Intake Instructions
Please use the medicine under you health care provider’s strict control. Necessarily perform a check up of the label on the medicine for learning exact dosing instructions. Paxil comes with an extra patient information sheet which is named a Medication Guide. Please make sure to read it carefully. Please read the leaflet again each time you get Paxil refilled.
Take Paxil by mouth with food or without it.
Swallow Paxil whole. Please note that breaking, crushing, or chewing the medicine before swallowing is not recommended.
Taking this medicine at fixed times each day will help you remember to take it.
Make sure to continue to take Paxil even if you feel actual improvement. Do not miss any doses. Please note that unexpected giving up Paxil without checking with your health care provider is not recommended. Side effects may occur. They may involve mental or mood changes, anemia or tingling of the skin, vertigo, confusion, headache, hard sleeping, or uncommon tiredness. You will be closely controlled when you start Paxil and whenever a change in dose is performed.
Drug Category and Mechanism
Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It affects by recovering the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which assists to make better certain mood problems.
Missed Dose
Should you miss a dose of this medicine please take it asap. If you find you have missed the previous dosage when it is almost time for your next dose, you should better skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Taking double or extra doses at once is not recommended. If more than one dose is missed, please contact your attending medical doctor or health care provider.
Storage
Please make sure to store the medicine at controlled room temperature between 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F).
Safety Precautions
Taking the medicine is not recommended in case:
you have allergic reactions to any component in Paxil
you are taking or have been treated with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine), selegiline, or St. John's wort within the last 14 days
you are taking a fenfluramine derivative (eg, dexfenfluramine), nefazodone, pimozide, a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) (eg, venlafaxine) or tryptophan
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
Some medical conditions may interact with the medicine. Inform your health care provider or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following are applicable to you:
you are pregnant/planning to become pregnant
you are a breast-feeding mother
you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine,
you are passing the treatment course with herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
you have allergic reactions to medicines, foods, or other substances
you or a family member has a history of manic-depression, suicidal thoughts or attempts, or alcohol or substance abuse
you have a history of convulsions, heart problems, liver problems, austere kidney problems, stomach or bowel bleeding, diabetes, or metabolism problems
you are dehumidified, have low blood sodium levels, or drink alcohol
you will be having electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
There are some MEDICINES that step into INTERACTION with the medicine. Please inform your health care provider if you take some medicines, including:
Anorexiants (eg, phentermine), cimetidine, linezolid, lithium, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), nefazodone, selegiline, serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan), SNRIs (eg, venlafaxine), St. John's wort, tramadol, such as a reaction that may involve an abnormally high body temperature, rigid muscles, changes in blood pressure, mental changes, confusion, petulance, agitation, state of excitement, and coma, may occur
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), aspirin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen) because the risk of bleeding, involving stomach bleeding, may be high levelled
Diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) as the risk of low blood sodium levels may grow
Antiarrhythmics (eg, flecainide, propafenone, quinidine), H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), as austere heart problems, involving uncommon heartbeat, may occur
Cyproheptadine, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), phenobarbital, as they may low level Paxil 's effectiveness
Aripiprazole, atomoxetine, clozapine, procyclidine, risperidone, theophylline, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) as the risk of their side effects may be high levelled by Paxil
Digoxin or tamoxifen as their effectiveness may be low levelled by Paxil
Probable Side Effects
Please discuss with your health care provider if any of the mentioned most COMMON side effects afterglow or become or causing bother:
Anxiety; blurred vision; infrequent or difficult evacuation of the bowels; low level of sexual desire or ability; diarrhea; giddiness; vertigo; dry mouth; gas; increased sweating; increased urination; appetite loss; emesis; irritation; stomach upset; problems with concentrating; hard sleeping; uncommon skin sensations; weakness; oscitation.
Please discuss with your health care provider if any of the mentioned most COMMON side effects afterglow or become or causing bother:
austere allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; hard breathing; tenseness in the chest; tumor of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bizarre behavior; dark or bloody stools; chest pain; excessive reflexes; fast or uncommon heartbeat; an abnormally high body temperature, chills, or sore throat; hallucinations; hard coordination; new or worsening shaking, panic attacks, belligerence, impulsiveness, irritability, enmity, exaggerated feeling of well-being, fidgetiness, or inability to sit still; resistant or austere ringing in the ears; continuos painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or husking skin; convulsions; severe or continuos anxiety or hard sleeping; obvious weight loss; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; uncommon bruising or bleeding; uncommon or severe mental or mood changes; changes in vision; worsening of depression.
