Flovent or Fluticasone Propionate
Drug Uses
Flovent is used for the prevention or reduction of the frequency and seriousness of bronchial asthma attacks however it does not help during an acute asthma attack.
How Taken
One should Use Flovent as prescribed by one’s doctor.
- One should shake Flovent gently before every use.
- To use the nose spray, one must gently blow his nose and sit down with the head tilted back slightly. The tip of the container should be placed into the nose. One should using a finger from the other hand, press against the opposite nostril to close it off. One must breathe gently through the open nostril and squeeze the spray container. If one is using more than 1 spray, he or she must wait for 1 to 2 minutes between the sprays. After using the medicine, the tip of the spray unit should be rinsed in hot water and dried with a clean tissue to curb contamination.
- Symptoms start to improve as soon as 12 hours after one uses Flovent and it should improve within a couple of days. The maximum benefit of Flovent cannot be achieved till one has taken the Flovent Spray for many days.
- One should use Flovent on a regularbasis to get the maximum benefit from it.
- One should use Flovent at the same time daily as this will help one remember to use it.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Flovent , a corticosteroid, works by reducing inflammatory reactions in the airways that are caused by allergens and air irritants.
Missed Dose
If one misses a dose of Flovent, he or she should use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose one must skip the missed dose and return to his or her regular dosing schedule. One should not use 2 doses of Flovent at one time.
Storage
One should store Flovent between 39 and 86 degrees F or it can be stored between 4 and 30 degrees C. The Flovent Spray should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.
Warnings Precautions
Flovent should not be taken if:
- One is allergic to any ingredient in Flovent;
- One is having a severe asthma attack that needs quick relief
One should consult the doctor or health care provider immediately if any of the following apply:
There are certain medical conditions that may interact with the intake of Flovent. One should inform the doctor or pharmacist if he or she has any medical conditions, especially the following:
- if one is pregnant, or plans to become pregnant, or is breast-feeding
- if one is taking any prescription or non-prescription medicine, a herbal preparation, or a dietary supplement
- if one has allergies to medicines or other substances
- if one has active or inactive tuberculosis or a positive skin test result for tuberculosis
- if one has infections of the respiratory tract, untreated fungal or bacterial infections, parasitic or viral infections, measles, chickenpox, herpes simplex in or around the eye, or has received a recent vaccination
- if one has diarrhea
- if one has glaucoma or cataracts
There are certain MEDICINES THAT MAY INTERACT with Floven hence it is important to inform the health care provider if one is taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
* Specific medicines that act on the liver like protease inhibitors [eg, ritonavir], or ketoconazole) as they may enhance the actions and side effects of Flovent when taken.
Possible Side Effects
One should check with one’s doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or appear bothersome:
* changes in or loss of senses of smell and taste; cough; diarrhea; dizziness; fever; flu-like symptoms (headache, tiredness, muscle aches, fever); infection of the nose and throat; aches and pains; asthma symptoms; bronchitis; nasal irritation or burning; nausea; nosebleed; runny nose; sore throat; stomach pain and vomiting.
Medical attention should be sought immediately if any of these severe side effects occur:
* hoarseness; increased pressure in the eye; infection or pain in the nose or throat; nasal septum perforation; repeated nosebleeds; voice changes,severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)cataracts and growth suppression in children.
More Information
The drug Flovent is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. One should not share it with other people.
If the symptoms do not improve or if they become worse after using Flovent, one should check with one’s doctor.
