Uses of the Drug
The main use of Glucotrol XL is to treat type 2 diabetes in those patients who are unable to control their levels of blood sugar by exercise and diet. This drug is used with exercise and diet. It can be either used alone or along with some other kind of antidiabetic drugs as well.
How to Take
Glucotrol XL should be taken as per the doctor’s recommendations. The label of the medicine should be checked for the right instruction on dosing. Glucotrol XL can be taken orally with food. Swallow the drug instead of chewing or crushing it. Try to take the medicine at same timing everyday so that you do not forget taking it. Even though you feel good do not stop taking Glucotrol XL. A single dose should not be missed.
Drug Mechanism and Class
Glucotrol XL is considered to be sulfonylurea antidiabetic medicine. It helps the pancreas in releasing insulin, which in turn lowers blood sugar.
Missed Dose
If you ever miss a single dosage of Zyvox, try taking it as early as you can. If it’s time for the next dosage, then the already missed dosage should be skipped. You can now follow the regular schedule of dosing. 2 doses should not be taken simultaneously.
Storage
Glucotrol XL should be stored at the room temperature somewhere between 15 to 30 degrees C (59 to 86 degrees F). It should be kept away from moisture and light. Don’t store it in bathroom. The medicine should be kept out of reach from pets and children.
Warnings Precautions
Glucotrol XL should NOT be taken if:
you are prone to allergies to a single ingredient present in Glucotrol XL
you have some severe problems related to diabetes (eg, diabetic coma, diabetic ketoacidosis)
you are having average to severe burns, or acidosis (very high levels of blood acid)
you are having type 1 diabetes
you have conceived and within one month of assumed date of delivery
You should get in touch with the doctor very soon if you notice any of the above-mentioned problems.
Some of the medical conditions might have interaction with Glucotrol XL. Inform your pharmacist or doctor in case you are having any other diseases and particularly if you are having any one of the below mentioned list:
if you have conceived, or planning to get pregnant, or breast-feeding
if you take any nonprescription or prescription medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation
if you are allergic to foods, medicines, or some other substance
if you already had a serious allergic reaction (eg, hives, severe rash, dizziness, breathing difficulties) to sulfonamide medicine, like celecoxib, acetazolamide, some diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide), sulfamethoxazole, probenecid, zonisamide, or valdecoxib
if you are having a record of any heart problems (eg, heart failure), thyroid, liver, kidney problems or bowel or stomach problems
if you are alcoholic or having any past record of ???alcohol abuse’
if you are having diarrhea, vomiting, poor nutrition or health, low vitamin B12 or blood calcium levels, high blood acid levels
if you are having infection, recent injury, or fever
if you are having a record of hormonal problems (eg, pituitary or adrenal problems, SIADH] (syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone) , or low levels of blood sodium
if you are suppose to have a surgery
Some of the MEDICINES MIGHT HAVE INTERACTION with Glucotrol XL. Inform your pharmacist or doctor in case you take any one of the below mentioned medicines:
Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) as they increase the levels of low blood sugar. They might even hide symptoms of low levels of blood sugar and can make it even more hard to be noticed
ACE (Angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole, miconazole), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), fenfluramine, chloramphenicol, clofibrate, MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors (eg, phenelzine), insulin, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines) (eg, ibuprofen), quinolone, antibiotics (eg, ciprofloxacin), phenylbutazone, probenecid, sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole) or salicylates (eg, aspirin), because they may increase the low levels of blood sugar
corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), Calcium channel blockers (eg, diltiazem), diazoxide, decongestants (eg, pseudoephedrine), estrogens, diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), isoniazid, niacin, hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills), phenytoin, phenothiazines (eg, promethazine), sympathomimetics (eg, epinephrine, albuterol, terbutaline), rifamycins (eg, rifampin), or some thyroid supplements (eg, levothyroxine) as they might decrease the effectiveness of Glucotrol XL Extended-Release Tablets. Which in turn can lead to high levels of blood sugar
Gemfibrozil as blood sugar might be decreased or increased
Common Side Effects
All medicines can have side effects. However, there are some people who have either less or no side effects. Check whether you have any of the side effects as mentioned below and in that case consult your doctor as soon as possible:
* dizziness; gas; diarrhea; nausea.
You should consult your doctor immediately in case you have the serious side effects as mentioned below:
* Severe allergic reactions (hives; rash; itching; tightness in chest; difficulty in breathing; swelling of face, lips, mouth, or tongue); dizziness; dark urine; confusion; chills, fainting; fever, or irregular heartbeat; persistent sore throat; symptoms of low blood sugar (eg, drowsiness, anxiety, fast heartbeat, lightheadedness, headache, persistent or severe dizziness, unusual sweating, tremors, weakness); persistent or severe blurred vision; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual weakness or tiredness; yellowing of skin or eyes.
